fly away

Forgive my absence, I went on a little staycation.

The counters are full and no matter how much I cook, can and freeze I can't keep up.  But the light has changed, nights are getting cool and there's no doubt that fall is coming.  So, no matter how overwhelmed I am, I'm not going to complain.  It'll be over soon enough.  (too soon!)

The one thing I won't miss when there are no more tomatoes, peppers, zucchini or tomatillos on the counter is the fruit flies.  (ok, I won't miss the zucchini either.)  And since I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this problem, here's how you make a fruit fly trap.

You will need a cup, a piece of scrap paper, tape, scissors and some vinegar.

Take your paper, make it into a cone and tape the seam.

Cut a small hole in the cone, not too big, but bigger than a fruit fly.

Pour a small amount of vinegar in the cup.

Put the cone on top of the glass, making sure that the tip is above the vinegar and not getting wet, and tape around it.

Fruit flies go in but they can't get out.

Oh and you know that old saying about attracting more flies with sugar than vinegar?  Total crap.

So ingenious! And I wish I lived closer to you to take some wonderful foods off your hands.

Haha, this is funny. We have a fruit fly problem too, so the hubs left a milk carton out with some orange juice (I think, I was out of town still) in it and now we really don't have such a big problem. We were drinking mimosa's one morning and the flies just kept going in our drinks so he decided to just give them their own and then he became obsessed with it and while he was home alone he became that old man that couldn't focus on anything but trapping the little boogers. He texted me about it and everything...

This is so smart. I'll be making one of these contraptions to get rid of those pesky little fruit flies in the house. Hope you had a lovely staycation!!

I was just explaining this sort of trap to a friend of mine with a fruit fly problem. I have discovered that it works just as well with a piece of fruit (especially a banana, but anything will do) at the bottom of the glass, and then you don't have that icky vinegar smell. (Although I usually just put the cone on top of the glass or jar, I don't tape it- maybe that keeps the smell in?)
