Race and ethnicity: Chicago

Beautiful, and kind of depressing, Bill Rankin's map of Chicago shows the racial and ethnic divides in the city. Red is White, Blue is Black, Green is Asian, Orange is Hispanic, Gray is Other, and each dot is 25 people. Data from Census 2000.

Race and ethnicity: New York City

Eric Fischer was so struck by the image, he made maps of other cities the same way. Check the rest out here.

How very beautiful, and sad at the same time. As much as we think America is a melting pot, it seems we still often separate into communities like this.

This is so interesting! I can't wait until the new census comes out and he does another one. This is why I love artists- they see the world so differently. Love it.

I was born in Chicago and spent a large portion of my life there. It's interesting how a beautiful work of art can draw attention to a serious topic.

These are awesome and so beautiful. If it wasn't so much about the racial divide I would rush right out and buy some for our apartment. They're so stereotypically accurate too...
