house share
Since most people don't really appreciate birds living under their roof tiles or shingles, designer Klaas Kuiken made terracotta roof tiles with a bird house built in to accommodate the little guys.
Pretty great, right?

open air
I kind of love these "airvases" made of paper by the Japanese design company Torafu.
Aren't they beautiful? You can make them whatever shape you want and change them on a whim.
you can buy them here.
And you can see how they work here.

best medicine
Dan Golden has turned some of their cartoons into pillows.
The pillows are pretty spendy, but they crack me up and I'd love to have one on our sofa.
you can pre-order them here.

I love this mini golf course Dutch design collective, La Bolleur is going to install during the Milan Furniture Fair.
One day I want to go to Milan for the Furniture Fair. (In fact it's a bit ridiculous that I haven't already, since my sister in law lives there!)
I can only hope that one day, when I do go that there will be something as fun as this to go see.

local yokel
I love this project, Polderceramics, by Atelier NL.Inspired by artists long fascination with the significance of place, designers Lonny van Ryswyck and Nadine Sterk made these dishes from clay found in different polders in the Noordoostpolder region of the Netherlands.
They took clay from a number of farms and used it to make dishes to eat the food grown on the farms.
I love that each of the photos looks like a Dutch still life, and that the handles, spouts and feet on the pots are made like traditional Dutch pewter ware and ceramics.Monday, November 30, 2009

decal
Keith is looking into decals for his pots and that made me think of these Droog Design cups we got while we were in the Netherlands last month.
Mina Wu and Jan B. originally made them as a part of the "Value for Money" presentation at the Milan Furniture Fair (I want to go to there). They made 3 versions- a plain white cup (cheapest), a white cup with hand painted flowers that was signed by the designers (most expensive), and a cup with a flower decal on it (somewhere in the middle).
Visitors to the exhibition voted for the cup with the decal as the best "value for money" and they put it into production.
My favorite part is where the decal folds over from the unglazed outside to the glazed inside. Sometimes, I'm a total ceramics nerd.

why the caged bird sings
I don't think that I could stop myself from singing like a canary while swinging in it.

lego
I don't really know what they use this concrete block for, but I've got a few (dozen) ideas.
It made me think of these Heineken beer bottle bricks, the 1960's version of upcycling.
It was an idea that was far ahead of its time so, sadly, there was only one production run of them. The shed built from that one run is still on the Heineken estate.

lightning in a bottle

I love this LED light made by Harry Allen (who also designed the pig bank I got for Steven a little while ago.)
He used a 3-d printer to make this in the shape of a firefly he found in his backyard. (Like the pig, it died of natural causes.)
